SIR-Spheres treat unresectable liver cancer.
It is a medical device that treats liver cancer using resin microspheres containing Y-90, a radioactive isotope. When SIR-Spheres are directly implanted into liver cancer cells, high doses of beta rays are emitted from that location, causing necrosis of the tumor.
SIR-Spheres treats all tumors in the liver with a high dose of radiation without affecting normal tissues, regardless of the number, size, or area of the tumor.
SIR-Spheres has been used in more than 100,000 patients worldwide, improving overall survival(OS), time to progressive disease (TTP) and quality of life, and has also shown good results in combination with chemotherapy in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer(mCRC).
